Winners of the first annual Meltdown Comic Awards !!

Via: Melt Blog

Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Meltdown Comics, Jason and Stacey are proud to present the winners of the first annual “Meltdown Comic Awards!”   And like our awards show brethren, the MCA’s do not disappoint in the statue department because each and every one of our illustrious winners will be the recipient of Meltdown’s very own version of a “No-Prize,” wait for it… that’s right, it’s a virtual “Golden Melty” award!  Woo hoo!  Yeah, we know what “virtual” means – the big budget version of these awards are still in the works.  But for the meantime, please welcome the “Golden Melty” to the awards show line up.

We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to vote in this year’s festivities.  All of the nominees were chosen from the Diamond Comic Distributors Top 100 Selling Books of 2009, but it takes real comic fans to be able to decide the winners.  And now, without further adieu, may we have the envelopes please?

The fire’s lit today as the gang shreds into books like NEW AVENGERS #62, FANTASTIC FOUR #576, THOR #607, BATMAN & ROBIN #9, and later discusses the news of the (last) week in which Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and others are shuffled around in the DC hierarchy. Oh, and in an unusual turn of events, Chris sings a lot in this episode. For real.

The meandering continues as the crew begins things (kinda) by talking some Scalped, DMZ #50, Captain America controversy, and continues chewing the fat with UNWRITTEN #10, PHONOGRAM: THE SINGLES CLUB (read this book already!), PUNISHERMAX, and MOON KNIGHT, as well as a bunch of comic book related nonsense. Somewhere along the way the subject changes to continuity, and we discuss how much it matters, as well as our favorite continuity-free comics.

Toss out those old opinions and put on a new perspective as Caleb leads the charge by dropping the bombshell of Siege #2 being his favorite book of the week. In the fallout, the boys discuss Marvel’s hot book of the week at length, and also meander around FANTASTIC FOUR by Hickman and Eaglesham, SMILE written and illustrated by Raina Telgemeier, briefly touch on GHOST RIDERS, SCALPED, and finally wrap up our Spidey discussion (or do we?)

In the second segment, rumors fly as we (hopefully) crush the notion that anything good can come out of WATCHMEN 2 ever being made. Ever.

We’re drowning in digital ink as the crew discusses the news of the day surrounding the announcement of the iPad from Apple, and break down what it could possibly mean for the future of digital comics. We also hit some books we’ve been digging, including AFRODISIAC, AMELIA EARHART: THIS BROAD OCEAN, KICK-ASS #8, IRREDEEMABLE #10, X-MEN LEGACY #232, BATMAN & ROBIN #7, THE WALKING DEAD #69, and Kieron Gillen’s last issue of THOR before SIEGE invades. Polished off with a quick chat on licensed books, and one has all the ingredients for a tasty treat. Mmm mmm good.

Fists, fur, and possibly phlegm flies as the gang chooses sides and throws down in an episode where everybody’s favorite neighborhood wall-crawler is centered squarely in the crosshairs! We begin the onslaught by discussing the Sentry, Chris gushes over the recently released WAR OF KINGS hardcover, and then puts the hammer down on Marvel for their recent action over trading in DC tie-ins for a Siege variant. The talk then turns to what’s happening in the Spidey universe, and its a tag team match of fury… only Aaron forgot to bring his partner.

The heat is on as the crew dives into part two of the event talk, which this week goes from the Bruce Banner of calm discussion to rampaging Hulk-level destruction of debate! After kicking things off by allowing Aaron to blather about the beautiful ROCKETEER: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES by Dave Stephens from IDW,  we chat up SIEGE #1, argue about what we would have done differently for the issue, and discuss Marvel and DC’s future plans. In our second segment, we switch gears and talk about the recent news about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film series being shelved, and discuss what we want from the reboot. Next week we talk about Spider-Man… wait for it… comics.

***BONUS*** At some point in this episode, Chris says something NOT negative about Mark Millar. I swear.

Coolsvillecomics.com has launched, and the gang breaks in the new website by welcoming back Heather Harris (AKA “Baroness Heather”) from POPBUNKER.NET , and wrapping our trilogy of talking females in comics. We also kick it off by discussing David Mazzucchelli’s ASTERIOS POLYP, Grant Morrison’s run on Batman up to this point, contrasted with Paul Dini’s Batman work of the last year, as well some DC work by Brian Azzarello. We quickly hit SCALPED from Vertigo, BLACKEST NIGHT, BOOM! Studio’s NOLA by Pierluigi Cothran, and HUNTER’S FORTUNE also from BOOM! written by… some guy… who may… or may not… be named Caleb.

An Introduction: What Is The Meltcast And Why Does It Call CoolsvilleComics.com Home?

Well, that first part is easy. The Meltcast is a comics podcast. It’s the brainchild of Chris Rosa, recorded every Wednesday at the renowned Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd in LA. Aaron Brewer handles the technical stuff on the recording side, and Francisco handles the technical stuff on the web side. Me, I basically just show up and run my mouth.

Why this particular web address is actually a pretty cool (ba-dum-BUM!) story. Season 19, episode 7 of The Simpsons, “Husbands And Knives” features a story where a new comic shop comes to town. Episode writer Matt Selman has been a long-time Meltdown customer, along with many others of The Simpsons creative family, and they based the hip new shop (Coolsville Comics) on Meltdown. Here’s what Selman had to say about it:

[T]he Springfield kids are sick of Comic Book Guy’s abuse, but he’s got the only store in town. Until — a new comic book store opens across the street, run by a NICE comic book guy. The kids embrace the hip, friendly, fun comic book guy, voiced by Jack Black [A Meltdown shopper in his own right! See MMHR #4 -The Editor], and Comic Book Guy goes nuts.

The new comic book store, called Coolsville, was inspired by an actual store in Hollywood called Meltdown [C]omics. Meltdown was a real breath of fresh air for comic shoppers weary of dusty old stores with only mainstream superhero stuff, endless boxes of back issues, and Punisher t-shirts. Meltdown embraced alternative comics, international comics, crazy toys, children’s books — a whole new universe of visual pop creativity. One day, when I was shopping there, I thought, Bart would love this place. And, he did.

You can read Selman’s full annotations to the episide at TIME.com’s Techland blog here, here and here. Thanks, Matt! Another interesting tidbit: Dan Clowes, who appears in the episode, drew the original Meltdown and Baby Melt logos. The awesome version of Mel in the header above is done by Carl Jones.

Just like Coolsville, we hope to bring a breath of fresh air by making the podcast that only we can make.

We have big plans for the Meltcast. Big plans. We may be a little garage, a little DIY, a little punk, a little rough around the edges right now, but we put it up for you to listen to anyway. Every week.

Which makes our webdress doubly appropriate. Because I don’t think anyone watched those crude original Simpsons shorts that aired on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 saw the phenomenal Rozz-Tox juggernaut they would become. But I like to think Matt Groening and James L. Brooks knew it was there.

To paraphrase Lady Gaga: we’re already huge, just nobody knows it yet.
